Minutes of Business session

The Southern Area Instructors Association (SAIA) Fall Business meeting was held during the National Utility Training & Safety Education Association (NUTSEA) annual meeting in Tucson, Arizona.

The business session was called to order by SAIA chairman, Doyle Totty, Tennessee, on September 29, 2008 at 8:10 am.

Chairman - Doyle Totty asked Ronnie Johnson, Tennessee, to lead the Invocation.

Chairman - Doyle Totty asked Danny Hayes, Tennessee, to lead the Pledge of Allegiance.

Chairman - Doyle Totty asked for the approval of the minutes to the summer meeting held in Albuquerque, New Mexico. A motion was made by Danny Hayes, Tennessee, and seconded by Larry Baker, New Mexico to approve the minutes as presented.  Motion carried.

Chairman, Doyle Totty called for the presentation of new members. The following were presented for membership.

            Michael Hall - Lenoir City Utilities

            Toby Clark - Flint Energies

            Al Maldonado - Navopache Electric Cooperative

            Guy Dale - Choctow Electric Cooperative

            Brian Chestnut - Horry Electric Cooperative

A motion was made by Danny Hayes, Tennessee, to approve those presented for membership.  The motion was seconded by Ken Guffey, Oklahoma. The motion was approved.

Chairman - Doyle Totty asked for a report on the 2009 summer meeting. Stan Rucker, Mississippi, reported that he had been in contact with Jim Wright, Georgia, and stated that the Georgia Electric Membership Corporation will host the 2009 SAIA Summer Meeting in Savannah, Georgia on June 8-11, 2009.

Chairman - Doyle Totty asked if there was any old business to discuss. Norman McDugle, Oklahoma, reported that the By-law Committee was still in the process of updating the by-laws and hoped to be completed by the 2009 summer meeting.

Micheal Weltzheimer, Texas, reported that he had been talking with Michael Kelly, Alabama, and the Alabama Statewide was willing to develop a Member Directory for SAIA. Micheal W. stated that an e-mail would be sent to all members requesting a picture and a small information sheet to be filled out and sent to Michael K. The directory should be available at the 2009 summer meeting.

Chairman - Doyle Totty asked if anyone wanted to report on the hurricane damage and restoration efforts that had been going on this year. Stan Ruker, Mississippi, Danny Williams, Texas, and Clarence Greene, Kentucky, gave reports. Stan and Danny thanked all those who had sent help to their states.

Chairman - Doyle Totty called for new business.

There was no new business to discuss.

Chairman - Doyle Totty called for the election of Officers for the year 2009.

The first office opened to the floor was Chairman.

Vice Chairman, Ron Cronan, Tennessee was nominated as Chairman. There being no other nominations. A motion was made by Larry Baker, New Mexico, to elect Ron Cronan by acclamation. The motion was seconded by Ken Guffey, Oklahoma. The motion was approved.

Chairman - Doyle Totty opened the floor to nominations for Vice Chairman.

Micheal Weltzheimer, Texas, was nominated for Vice Chairman. There being no other nominations. A motion was made by Danny Hayes, Tennessee, to elect Micheal Weltzheimer by acclamation. The motion was seconded by Danny Williams, Texas. The motion was approved.

Chairman - Doyle Totty opened the floor for nominations for Secretary.

Glenn Cunningham, Georgia, was nominated for Secretary. There being no other nominations. A motion was made by Bill Eskew, Tennessee, to elect Glenn Cunningham by acclamation. The motion was seconded by Norman McDugle, Oklahoma. The motion was approved.

Chairman - Doyle Totty extended his appreciation to the SAIA Members for the opportunity to serve as Chairman. He expressed that it was an honor to serve in the position. He then passed the gavel to newly elected Chairman, Ron Cronan, Tennessee.

Chairman - Ron Cronan presented past Chairman Doyle Totty with the past chair plaque and expressed his appreciation to him for his service to SAIA.

Chairman - Ron Cronan asked Larry Baker to come up and give a brief history of the Ray Pantel Award. Larry Baker described the type of man Ray Pantel was and his love for the safety of all electric line workers. He expressed that it was an honor for those who receive the Ray Pantel Award to be recognized as having the same characteristics as Ray Pantel had.

Chairman - Ron Cronan asked Micheal Weltzheimer, Texas, to come up and present the 2008 Ray Pantel Award. Micheal Weltzheimer presented the Ray Pantel Award to Larry Detwiler, Kansas. Larry Detwiler expressed his appreciation for the award.

There being no further business Chairman, Ron Cronan asked for a motion to adjourn. Ken Guffey, Oklahoma, made a motion. Larry Baker, New Mexico, seconded the motion. The 2008 SAIA Fall Business Meeting adjourned at 9:00 a.m. September 29, 2008.
