Minutes of Business Session
September 21, 2009


The Southern Area Instructors Association (SAIA) autumn meeting was held at the Minneapolis Hilton Hotel, Minneapolis, Minnesota. The meeting was hosted by Great River Energy and the Minnesota Rural Electric Association. The following meeting minutes were recorded by Glenn Cunningham, Georgia, SAIA Secretary and presented following the meeting agenda:

Call To Order:
The meeting was called to order by SAIA Chairman, Ron Cronan, Tennessee, on September 21, 2009 at 8:00 AM.

Chairman Cronan then asked Vernon Shearer, Chairman of NUTSEA to address the members. Chairman Shearer welcomed all the members to Minneapolis and the joint NUTSEA/SAIA/Quad States annual meeting. He then concluded with asking for members to consider volunteering for hosting the 2011 NUTSEA conference.

Prayer:
Chairman Cronan thanked Chairman Shearer, NUTSEA, GRE and the MREA for hosting the meeting and then asked Norm McDougal, Oklahoma to lead the Invocation.

Pledge:

Chairman Cronan then led the attendees in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Approval of 2009 SAIA Summer Meeting Minutes:
Chairman Cronan asked for the approval of minutes for the spring meeting held in Savannah Georgia. A motion was made by Ken Guffy, Oklahoma, seconded by Glenn Cunningham, Georgia, to approve the minutes as presented. Motion carried.

Present/Accept New Members:
Chairman Cronan called for the presentation of new members. The following were presented for membership:
• Scott Ferguson- Sam Houston Electric Cooperative
(presented by Wendy Regan of Texas)
• Jason Ginn- Shelby Energy Cooperative
(presented by Clarence Greene of Kentucky)
• Joe Penson- Choctaw Electric Cooperative
(presented by Ken Guffy of Oklahoma)
•Chris Saling- Upper Cumberland Electric Membership Cooperative
(presented by Danny Hayes of Tennessee)

A motion was made by Stan Rucker, Mississippi, to approve those presented for membership. The motion was seconded by Ken Guffy, Oklahoma. The motion was approved.

Report on 2010 SAIA Summer Meeting:
Chairman Cronan then asked for a report on the 2010 SAIA meeting to be held in Tennessee. Danny Hayes, Tennessee, then rose to inform the membership that the SAIA summer meeting would indeed be held June 23-25, 2010 in Gatlinburg and that details would be forthcoming as they develop.

Old Business:
1. Discussion/Vote on proposed By-Law Changes:

Jim Wright, Georgia, presented the changes and was prepared to answer any questions as necessary. Ken Guffy, Oklahoma, made a motion to accept the changes as presented. Stan Rucker, Mississippi, seconded the motion. Motion passed. Chairman Cronin then asked the group to recognize Jim Wright and the By-Laws committee for the work they did by a round of applause.

2. Discussion/Update on SAIA Member Directory Cost:
A general discussion ensued whereupon it was discussed about the payment of the directory in its hard copy form. A suggestion was made to provide the directory in an electronic format to insure access for all members and to make changes to the directory easier as members change. The membership then decided to add updating/frequency/how to accomplish this to the agenda at the SAIA 2010 Summer Meeting in Tennessee.

3. Update on the Ray Pantel Award Presentation:

Chairman Cronan informed the membership that the NUTSEA Board of Directors accepted the request from the SAIA membership to present the Pantel Award during the award portion of the NUTSEA banquet.

New Business:
There were no new items to discuss at this time.

Election of 2010 SAIA Officers:
Michael Weltzheimer was nominated for the position of Chairman. With the nomination made, a motion was made from the floor and seconded to cease any balloting and proceed to install Michael Weltzheimer, Mississippi, as the new Chairman. The motion was seconded. A vocal vote was taken, with the “ayes” in favor, none opposed, and the new Chairman was elected.

Glenn Cunningham was nominated for the position of Vice-Chairman. With the nomination made, Stan Rucker, Mississippi, made the motion that the balloting cease and to install Glenn Cunningham, Georgia, as the new Vice-Chairman. Ken Guffy, Oklahoma, seconded the motion. A vocal vote was taken, with the “ayes” in favor, none opposed, and the new Vice-Chairman was elected.

The Secretary/Treasurer position was now up for selection. The Nominating Committee presented four names for the position with Wade Hurst, Oklahoma, selected by a show of hands. A motion was made from the floor to install Wade Hurst as the new Secretary/Treasurer and was seconded by Birchie West, Central New Mexico Cooperative.

Presentation of Awards:
Chairman Ron Cronan in his final act as Chairman presented newly elected Chairman Michael Weltzheimer with the Chairman’s Gavel.

The past Chair Award was presented to Ron Cronan by newly installed Chairman Michael Weltzheimer

The Ray Pantel award was given to Clarence Greene, Kentucky. Clarence than gave a short acceptance speech upon acceptance of SAIA’s prestigious award.

Adjourn:
Chairman Michael Weltzheimer called for adjournment of the meeting at 9:00 AM. At this time, Ken Guffy, Oklahoma made the motion to adjourn the meeting. This was seconded by Danny Hayes, Tennessee, and with the membership in agreement, the meeting concluded and adjourned.
