Businesses that can choose who generates their electricity are concerned about more than just price, says a national survey.
The survey, by RKS Research & Consulting of North Salem, New York, found that businesses that switched electric generators were less satisfied with their overall service, including expected savings, reliability, customer services, and information.
“Switching suppliers doesn’t always deliver improvements,” says Carmine
Grastataro, RKS senior vice president in charge of the survey.
Nearly half the states have restructured their electric industry, allowing customers to choose among power companies, much like local phone customers can shop for long-distance service. Kentucky, with some of the lowest rates in the nation, has decided to wait and see how restructuring works out in those other states. Kentucky is now in the midst of a restructuring study.
One in five American businesses can now choose their power generator, says the survey. Seven out of ten of those elected to stay with their current supplier.
“The energy crisis in California, coupled with disappointment over competitive electric prices, have helped businesses focus on value-added information and energy services,” says
Grastataro. “For these businesses, competition is not just about price. It’s about finding the total solutions package that delivers the ultimate in value.”
