Kentucky
Public Service Commission Approves Electric Cooperatives'
Consolidation
10/04/01
The
Kentucky Public Service Commission
(PSC) announced on Thursday, October 4, that it has approved the consolidation of
Blue Grass Energy Cooperative
and Harrison Electric Cooperative. The consolidation will result in a two percent reduction in the residential rates of Harrison’s customers.
A January 2001 consolidation study, commissioned by the two co-ops and conducted by Harper Consulting, estimated a cost savings of more than $10 million as
a result of the consolidation. Both Blue Grass Energy and Harrison Electric boards
of directors approved the consolidation in May 2001, and the members of both cooperatives approved the consolidation by mail ballot in August of this year. The consolidation will become effective January 1, 2002.
Harrison Electric has 13,000 customers in Bourbon, Bracken, Grant, Harrison, Nicholas, Pendleton, Robertson and Scott counties. It is located in Cynthiana. Blue Grass Energy is headquartered in Nicholasville and serves nearly 33,000 customers in Anderson, Estill, Fayette, Franklin, Garrard, Henry, Jackson, Jessamine, Madison, Mercer, Nelson, Shelby, Spencer, Washington and Woodford counties.
The newly formed cooperative, also to be named Blue Grass Energy, will be headquartered in Nicholasville. Harrison Electric’s Cynthiana office will become a Blue Grass Energy district office. The new cooperative will also have district offices in Lawrenceburg and Richmond.
