Special License Plate Honors Linemen
06/01/2010
The Kentucky Dental Association has one. So do the Kentucky
Colonels, a renowned social
club. And now lineworkers in the
Bluegrass State have one of their own, too.
The first license plates honoring Kentucky electric utility lineworkers rolled off the presses a few months ago. And, the plates are the first of its kind in any state honoring the nobel profession of a lineman.
There was another first, too—for the state’s three lineman training schools. Starting with this first round, a portion of registration fees will go to the schools and continue each year with renewals and future purchases.
The license plate campaign was the idea of Kenneth Arrington, a director at Grayson RECC, Grayson, Ky., a farmer who wanted lineworkers to get their day in the sun—at least on the highway.
As Arrington put it, the co-op “did the legwork” by handling
paperwork with the state and leading the charge to collect 900 prepaid orders to put the plates on the state’s roster.
Other co-ops in the state and the Kentucky Association of Electric Co-ops promoted the plates at safety events. Randy
Bucknam, a graphic designer at East Kentucky Power Co-op,
Winchester, designed the plate’s silhouette of two linemen attached to a pole.
“The license plates are giving linemen needed recognition,” said Bruce Aaron Davis, director of Member Services and Public Relations at Big Sandy RECC. “Maybe a young person will look at the plates and consider this as a profession.”
If you are interested in purchasing one of the plates, they are available at your county clerk’s office. The cost is $25 plus local fees, and you can donate an additional $5 to help educate future linemen through the Kentucky Community and Technical College system.
