Record Number Attend Washington Youth Tour
06/20/2010
A record number of high school seniors attended the 39th annual Kentucky Rural Electric Washington Youth Tour!
On June 11, 86 high school seniors from 21 of Kentucky's 24 distribution electric cooperatives across the state left to explore our nation's Capitol on this weeklong, all-expenses-paid trip open to select high school students whose homes are served by electric cooperatives.
The 2010 program eclipsed the previous record of 84 students that was set in 2005.
Kentucky’s electric co-ops send students to Washington, DC, for a number of reasons:
• to reward students for academic achievement and community leadership
•
to educate students about the role of electric co-ops in the national economy
• to
foster students’ appreciation for the democratic form of government
•
expose students to the sights and sounds of our nation’s heritage
•
build students’ leadership skills so they may make a difference in their communities.
The tour is designed to be both educational and enjoyable. Participants also have the opportunity to become well-acquainted with many other young people from across America.
In addition to sightseeing, students spend an entire day on Capitol Hill meeting with Kentucky’s congressional delegation. During those meetings, students have the opportunity to discuss current events with Kentucky’s federal legislators. The Kentucky students also participate in the national Rural Electric Youth Day to learn from public figures and other inspirational speakers.
The Kentucky Rural Electric Washington Youth Tour is sponsored by participating Kentucky electric cooperatives, the Kentucky Association of Electric Cooperatives, and the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association.
