Dr.
Paul Maddox Receives Distinguished Service Award from Kentucky Electric
Cooperatives 11/20/02
On November
18 rural doctor
and community leader Paul Maddox accepted on behalf of Kentucky's 26
electric cooperatives the 2002 Distinguished Rural Kentuckian Award
during the Kentucky
Association of Electric Cooperatives' annual meeting banquet in
Louisville.
The purpose of
this award is to recognize a Kentuckian who contributes greatly to the qualities and
values of rural life in our commonwealth. Dr. Maddox is the award's
19th recipient.
For almost 50 years, Dr. Paul Maddox has brought the highest level of personalized physician assistance to patients drawn to his practice in the eastern Kentucky town of Campton. Dr. Maddox is now 77 years of age. He was named National Country Doctor of the Year by
StaffCare Incorporated in the year 2000 – an honor extended only to a single recipient from among hundreds of nominations throughout the nation.
Having delivered over 6,000 babies, and treating over 1.5 million patients throughout his practice, Dr. Maddox has influenced countless lives. At one point in his career, he was literally on call seven days a week, 365 days a year, living in an apartment just above his practice. Currently, he provides healthcare to 96 of the 100 patients in a nursing home at Campton.
He also served two terms as Campton’s mayor, and recently donated significant financial contributions to build a local library, a veteran’s memorial, and a $20,000 educational trust fund for his one-millionth patient.
Dr. Maddox was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 1998. He astonished many by scheduling radiation treatments around his patients’ appointments so he could continue practicing medicine daily. Dr. Maddox and his wife, Patricia, have four children – all of whom reside in Kentucky.
