Electric Co-ops Send Students to Washington, DC
06/30/2004
Seventy-five high school juniors traveled to Washington, DC, the
week of June 11-18 as part of the 33rd annual Kentucky Rural Electric
Washington Youth Tour.
During their weeklong trip, the students visited many of our national
capitals historic sites and museums and studied American history
and government. They also learned about the important role of electric
cooperatives in Americas economy and visited with around 1300
other high school students who were there as electric co-op representatives
from across America.
In addition to sightseeing, the students spent an entire day on
Capitol Hill meeting with the members of Kentuckys congressional
delegation. During those meetings, the students had the opportunity
to discuss current events with Kentuckys federal legislators.
The Kentucky students also participated in the national Rural Electric
Youth Day on June 14 to learn from public figures and other inspirational
speakers. This years Youth Day agenda included Mike Schlappi,
a four-time Paralympic Medallist and two-time world Champion Wheelchair
Basketball champion. Mike Schlappi has an inspiring message for
every American, young or old: Just because you cant
stand up, doesnt mean you cant stand out.
Also speaking to the students at Youth Day were Hilda Legg, Administrator
of the Rural Utilities Service,
an agency within the U.S. Department of Agriculture; and Mary Harding
McLaury, director of communication and member services for Touchstone
Energy® Cooperatives.
The Kentucky Rural Electric Washington Youth Tour is sponsored by
participating Kentucky electric cooperatives, the Kentucky Association
of Electric Cooperatives, and the National
Rural Electric Cooperative Association.
