East Kentucky Power Cooperative (EKPC), based in Winchester, KY, has named Robert Marshall as its new president and chief executive officer effective January 1, 2007. He replaces current CEO Roy Palk, who will work on special projects involving strategic matters, regulatory issues and other outside issues until his retirement in 2008.
Marshall is currently president and CEO of Owen Electric Cooperative in Owenton, KY, an EKPC member that serves 55,000 homes, farms and businesses in nine northern Kentucky counties.
Marshall has served as president and CEO of Owen Electric for seven years. Prior to that, he worked for two years as general manager of Coosa Valley Electric Cooperative, a distribution system served by Alabama Electric Cooperative.
Before his electric co-op career, Marshall spent 28-years working for Florida Power and Light. At FP&L he rose from a field engineer to vice president of the Distribution Business Unit, leading 4,500 employees and serving 2.8 million consumers.
“Since 1941, EKPC has been a leader and innovator in improving the lives of Kentuckians,” Marshall said. “I look forward to continuing that tradition as EKPC confronts and overcomes the challenges ahead, and continues to provide affordable, reliable power while improving lives.”
Marshal said that the G&T’s immediate challenges include rising market costs for fuel and plant construction and growth in power demand, which has been occurring at twice the national rate.
Marshall is a native of Sumter, SC, and attended Clemson University where he earned a B.S. in Civil Engineering. He completed a program for Management Development from the Harvard Business School. He served in the “Old Guard,” a ceremonial unit of the U.S. Army at Arlington, VA. He and his wife, Paula, have four daughters.
EKPC is a not-for-profit organization providing wholesale electricity to 16 member cooperatives that serve more than 500,000 Kentucky homes, farms, businesses and industries across 89 counties.
