Touchstone
Energy® Motorcycle Charity Run VII A Huge Success!
09/05/2006
The
rev of the engines the echo of the bikes through the valley
Theres no greater sound than a line of motorcycles cruising
along the back roads of Kentucky for a good cause.
This years Touchstone Energy Motorcycle Charity Run benefiting
the WHAS Crusade for Children was a huge success!
I saw a lot of familiar faces of people who joined us again
this year and many new faces as well, said Run Founder Frank
Owen Brockman of Farmers Rural
Electric Cooperative Corporation in Glasgow. This years
weather was the best weve had in three years.
Bikes
of all kinds (on two wheels and three!) could be seen in the parking
lot, as people strolled around pointing and admiring designs and
chrome. Laughter could be heard at the 50/50 tent where one gentleman
was stretching his arms as far as possible to get more tickets,
and people purchased t-shirts sporting the logo and ride information.
Old and new friends gathered in the shade to enjoy the refreshments
and good company. This year, children joined the fun as co-riders,
along with a wide variety of stuffed animals that tagged along on
the back of several bikes. This is a family ride, said
Brockman. Safety is our number one concern, and we look forward
to this event every year.
The run received the 2006 Touchstone Energy Brand Champion Award,
which Brockman accepted this year in San Antonio, Texas. It has
also received the 2004 Touchstone Energy Community Service Award
Honorable Mention and the 2002 Touchstone Energy Best Local Event
award. The credit really goes to individuals within our cooperatives
who help with the coordination of the run. It takes a lot of planning
and teamwork. Without them, this event wouldnt exist,
said Brockman.
Local police, fire, and rescue services also assisted by escorting
the long line of bikes through towns and communities and ensuring
the safety of the group. We just like to give back to the
community, and this is one way we can show our support by participating
in charity runs, said Sgt. Michael Delaney of the Bowling
Green Police Departments motorcycle division who led the procession
through Warren County.
With
175 registered bikes at each leg, a total of 350 bikes met at Central
Hardin High School in Elizabethtown where $4,885 was presented to
Rebecca Jackson, CEO of WHAS Crusade for Children. Over the past
seven years of the run, a grand total of $26,000 has been donated
to The Crusade, whose mission is to grant donated funds to help
local children overcome physical, mental, emotional, and medical
challenges. And courtesy of Touchstone Energy, 31 door prizes were
awarded.
When all is said and done the sun, the laughter, and the
wind in our hair coming together for the children is what
its all about, folks. Touchstone Energy is a national alliance
of local, member-owned electric cooperatives providing high standards
of service to customers large and small. Their national motto is
The power of human connections, and this event is certainly
a great example of that connection and what the power of a few people
can do for the lives of many.
