Transformer Banking (Team Event A)

Mean Time = 12 minutes ~ Dead Time = 17 minutes

Event Description:
In this event, participants will change a closed-delta transformer bank to an open-delta bank. The C phase transformer is bad, so the fuses to the bank were opened. The participants shall use care in maintaining proper voltage, phase rotation and grounding. The fuses will be open and the service will be dead, but not grounded (rubber gloves required).

Basic Outline:
1. Teams will have a 5 minute set-up time.

2. Time will start on the judge’s signal.

3. The participants will climb the pole, cover up the neutral*, and remove hot line clamps from each phase.
*This event has been constructed with 4’ spacing. Covering the neutral will be optional, based on how teams choose to work this event.

4. The participants will then isolate C phase transformer, from both the high side and the secondary side. The fuse barrel shall be removed and sent down to the ground in a bag. The high side (C phase) will be rolled up and kept in the clear. The secondary leads shall be removed from the transformer and sent down to the ground in a bag.

5. The bank shall then be converted to an open delta configuration (see RUS G2.1G).

6. The high side of the cut-outs will be reconnected, and neutral cover up removed (if necessary) as the team climbs down below the secondary.

7. When all work is completed, they shall announce, “that the bank is coming hot”. Then the linemen on the pole (using 8’ hot stick) or the ground man (using an extendo stick), can close the fuses.

8. The meter base will be checked for proper voltage and phase rotation by a team member. Proper PPE must be worn while performing voltage / rotation checks. Once checked, he shall announce that they are correct (the judges must be able to hear this verification).

9. Time will stop when all team members are on the ground and the meter base has been checked.

Notes:
• Transformers will be 3-15 kvas with dual high side bushings
• Teams will check voltage/rotation at a meter pole set near the transformer bank pole
• Transformer bushings must be adjusted with ratchet, socket, or speed wrenches – no channel locks or crescent wrenches can be used
• A judge in a bucket will be evaluating teams and resetting the event between participants
• Ground connections for the high side of the transformers will be made with split bolts ( “secondary connections” deleted - high side ground connection only)
• Transformer case grounds will not be used
• Wire sizes and specific configurations will be communicated to teams after event construction is completed on rodeo grounds

Possible Deductions:
1. Infractions of any rules listed in the General Rules
2. No team member may be on a pole, or have an extendo stick raised, before time starts (2 pts.)
3. Failure to wear proper PPE while performing voltage / rotation checks (5 pts.)
4. Failing to verbally confirm that the voltage and rotation checks have been done (2 pts.)
5. Wearing hooks outside of marked circles around pole (2pts.) 6. Cut-out doors must be opened and closed with proper use of hot stick – hook in ring of cut-out door (2pts.)
7. Mis-handling, or dropping of material or tools (2pts.)
8. Using improper tools to adjust transformer bushings (2pts.)
9. Incorrect configuration / wire connections (2pts.)
10. Sloppy construction (judgment call-2pts.)
11. Poor communication between crew members (2pts.)

Provided material:
(Note – these items will be provided, however it is up to the participant’s judgment to use the proper tools, equipment, and PPE for each event – not all provided material must be used.)

• Hot sticks (extendo & 8’ hot sticks)
• Tool bags
• Hand line
• Extra bolts, nuts, riser wire, split bolts, etc.
• Volt / rotation meters
• Other items as needed
