As local businesses owned by their customers, being good neighbors comes
naturally for electric co-ops. When I became editor of Kentucky Living
in 1995 I decided to write about examples of that neighborliness in my
editors column. During the next three years I talked with people at
each of the 24 co-ops whose consumer-members receive Kentucky Living.
Since then some of those people have retired, some of the co-ops have
merged or changed their names, and some of the programs I wrote about
evolved into other programs. But the point is the same electric
cooperatives are inseparable from their communities.
