Not all electric utilities are alike. In fact, Kentucky, like the remainder of the United States, is served by three types of electric utilities: investor-owned utilities, municipal utilities, and cooperative utilities.

Investor-owned utilities are owned by stockholders and are in business to earn profits for those investors.

Municipal utilities are owned by cities and are operated as government agencies to serve city residents.

Cooperative utilities are owned by the customers they serve and are run by democratically elected boards of directors to provide electric service to those customer-owners on a not-for-profit basis.

In addition to providing reliable, affordable electricity, Kentucky’s electric co-ops are committed to improving the quality of life for all Kentuckians. Electric co-ops accomplish this goal through a variety of means such as economic development activities, safety demonstrations for school and community groups, and scholarships for college-bound students.

In Kentucky, electric cooperatives serve more than 1.5 million people (about 35% of the state’s population) in 117 of Kentucky’s 120 counties.
